JOB PURPOSE

The assistant manager helps the general manager organize and monitor the activities of practitioners at The Spa at Ambleside, support the staff where needed, and implement tasks delegated by the general manager. The assistant manager will be asked to assist during hiring, training, special events, in addition to monitoring daily operational activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

● Act as an example of professional and appropriate behavior in the luxury spa market.
● Uphold the standards in accordance with the Employee Handbook, and be an exemplary model for such standards, including, but not limited to, uniform, makeup, hygiene, and behavior.
● Ensure that practitioners fulfill their duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Employee Handbook and practitioner job descriptions, and support/enable practitioners in the fulfillment of their duties and responsibilities, as needed.
● Assist the general manager with staff hiring and training.
● Conduct systematic reviews of treatment documentation and report variances to the general manager.
● Conduct systematic evaluation of practitioners’ skill performance and report above-average performance as well as deficiencies to the general manager.
● Tactfully address inappropriate technique or substandard skill with practitioners, and guide practitioners to the desired outcome.
● Monitor the daily spa bookings and ensure the team stays on schedule, making last-minute scheduling decisions, as needed.
● Ensure all practitioners are working efficiently and there is enough staff coverage at all times.
● Participate in training sessions or educational seminars for new products, services, procedures and trends in the spa industry.
● Assign tasks to practitioners between clients.
● Firmly maintain team discipline, encouraging behavior that reflects an image appropriate for display to clients of the student spa.
● Address breaches of conduct by practitioners and report to the general manager.
● Brief the general manager regarding practitioner evaluations and assist with performance appraisal meetings.
● Diplomatically handle client complaints, as escalated to them.
● Complete Critical Incident Reports, when appropriate, and submit them to the general manager.
● Assist the general manager with special events and activities.
● Assist the general manager with miscellaneous activities in preparation for spa opening.
● Present assigned topics at staff meetings.
● Fill practitioner gaps, if contingency plan fails.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position has a full-time work schedule, 1pm-10pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Shifts include up to a one-hour lunch break. The assistant manager is expected to remain flexible in their daily activities to accommodate unanticipated operational needs and emergencies.

This position will involve frequently handling difficult situations that arise with practitioners and clients with a calm professionalism, and will require that the assistant manager is not easily flustered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position will require standing and/or walking around for long periods of time, alternating with significant periods of computer/desk work. Bending, squatting, and kneeling will be required.

The assistant manager will be required, at times, to perform fine work that requires precise motor skills and dexterity in dim lighting. They must be able to physically demonstrate skills to practitioners during training session

Eligibility Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include:
● Legally eligible to work in Canada.
● Certification by a recognized, and preferably accredited, esthetics training center in the esthetics and spa treatments offered by The Spa at Ambleside
● Minimum four years of experience in the professional esthetics and spa industry.
● Minimum two years of experience in a supervisory or training role in a day spa, beauty salon, or skin care clinic.
● Ability to communicate effectively and with professionalism in written and spoken English.
● Reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license.
● The following qualifications are not required to apply, but are an asset to the position-holder:
o CIDESCO Beauty Therapy diploma
o CIDESCO Beauty & Spa Management diploma
o Training in therapeutic massage techniques
